- Transfers are an excellent solution where there are too many colors
to reproduce with screenprinting.
- They are an economical and attractive solution to "one time"
shirts for birthdays, surprise gifts, and concept shirts.
- The disadvantage is that they must be done on white shirts for the
colors to show properly.
- There are a number of myths about transfers.
- Myth #1: They aren't durable. This is true when you try to apply them
with a household iron. We use a commercial heat press. The secret to
successful transfer adhesion is Time, Temperature, and Pressure.
- Myth #2: They will peel off. Not when they are applied properly. Our
transfers will last just as long as most screenprinted shirts when cared
for properly. They should be washed inside out, in cool or warm water
with a mild detergent.
- What is a transfer? A transfer is a special kind of paper that has
a backing and a silicon based (usually) transparent layer. They are
typically fed through color laser printers, color copiers, or inkjet
printers to place an image onto the silicon. It is then placed on the
shirt and a heat and pressure are used for a specific amount of time
to cause the silicon layer to melt on to the shirt. We use about 50
lbs of pressure at 350 degrees for 15 to 20 seconds. The pressure and
temperature are typically what cause home applications to fail. It is
possible, but very difficult to get it right with an iron. In addition
we use a industry leading material which is not sold at the consumer
level.
- We can produce transfers as large as 11" Wide by 14" tall
(just like a screenprint).
